GE – Alstom

Since the purchase of Alstom by GE, support for Alstom systems has been limited in the market.

Emerson –  TCSA

Emerson acquired Turbine Controls Service Associates (TCSA) in January 2011. Customers have found limited support of these systems. Basler front-end retrofit options can be used for many systems with full system replacement options available for others.

BRUSH

Brush AVR’s were popular in the 1980s and 1990s.  Support for these units has been extremely limited.  Read our application note about a recent Brush MAVR unit that was successfully retrofitted with Basler’s DECS-250N.

ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS TO REPLACING AGED STATIC EXCITER SYSTEMS

Over the years, many rotating exciters have been replaced for static exciters on synchronous machines. As these replacement excitation systems age, much of the analog hardware becomes obsolete and can no longer be supported by the manufacturer, again forcing the replacement of the entire excitation system.

Today, rather than replacing the entire excitation system, another approach is to replace only the analog portion and keep the power rectifier bridge.  This paper discusses the results of this alternative solution which can result in substantial cost savings.
